World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
Upgrades to items are a method to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the type of upgrade you choose, it can boost an item's Rarity or Mark Level, and also boost other stats.
Upgrading equipment in The War Within requires a set number of Flightstones and Crests, and each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a certain amount.
Item Level
The value of an item's basic stats increases when it is upgraded. This is the sum of an item's leveled-up perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades to items can be costly, depending on the upgrader you choose and the type of upgrade you choose to do. This is due to how many perks must be replaced in order for the item to be upgraded.
Item level is a popular measure of power, and can be seen on all tooltips for items. It is also used to limit the amount of PvP gear players are able to wear since PvP is not available at a lower level. The average level of an item can be found in the character sheet.
Using the item level can help players evaluate the strength of equipment when deciding to purchase or sell. It's an excellent indicator of the quality of an item and the amount of damage it is capable of dealing with. The level of an item can be used to compare items when evaluating a vendor's inventory.
On PC, you are able to view the item level by pressing ALT or using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will show the full description of the item, including its level. It is also accessible by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel in chat.
There are various theories about how the calculation of the item's level is made. One theory says that the level of an item is determined by formulas that determine the worth of the stats of an item really are. It considers that different advantages are valued differently and that gems in sockets boost the value of the item. This can result in a calculated item's ilvl that is typically very close to Blizzard's actual level of the item.

Item Stats
The item's stats can determine the fate of an item for players. The game makes use of a lot of them in various ways to encourage players to play with a variety of weapons, and to prevent one weapon from being "the best." The stat mods of a weapon boost the base stats. These stat mods are then boosted by a player's level.
The upgrades to items add by increasing certain stats of the item. The rarity of an item determines its upgrade cost. A white or grey item for instance, can only be upgraded one time, while an item with rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times with more expensive costs.
Another method to alter the stats on an item is through affixes. They are stat boosts which can be added by the player to an item. Affixes can do things like give the item extra damage, add a special ability to the item (such as reviving the dead or decreasing the duration of cooldowns) or make the item unique by adding a special name to the item.

In addition to rerolling affixes, players can select which of the available stats to be kept on an item when it is upgraded. The possible stat ranges of an item are determined by the level of the item, however all items are guaranteed to have at least one stat within the range, unless it is a unique item or a God roll from a raid boss.
Another thing that could change is the possibility to upgrade equipment without having to roll the attaches, or select which stats to boost. Like the base equipment, it would have to be done per item, and the interface for item comparison will not show all possible stats at once.
Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player boosts the probability of obtaining items and the properties that are spawned by loot and the strength of these properties. It does not, however, directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives the player the chance to upgrade their equipment earlier in the game. This is more beneficial for early game runs, because players tend to put defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.
Luck can also increase the chances of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade probability which increases with each item level and can be further increased by using an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.
Weapons, armor, and shields can spawn or be crafted with the Luck property, which has an initial value of 40. These items can be improved with golden ingots, or spined leather (depending on the material they are made of) to add another 40 luck or to increase the luck of the item to 140.
Moreover some items, such as the Hollow weapon, which is infused with Hollow, can be equipped to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5%. These items can be found in the shop or created using the right ingredients.
Item Failure
Not all upgrades are successful. Cash shop items can be used to increase the success rate of an upgrade or to prevent players from losing their item in the event that it fails.
The rate of success of an upgrade is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage is the probability of successful upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special materials. The probability of success can only be increased by so much, and the chance that the upgrade will fail cannot be greater than 100%..
The luck of an item can affect the success of an upgrade. All items have a success rate of 25 percent and each item with Luck increases the chance of success by 5%.
The item upgrade overlays are displayed above items in the inventory. This can block enchantment effects as well as other effects. If item upgrading wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
